The House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 issued a legislative contempt charge against Deputy Information Minister, Eugene Fahngon for failing to adhere to an official communication sent to him by the body.
It can be recalled, Deputy Minister Fahngon and Representative Edwin Melvin Snowe of Bomi County were seeing in a circulated social media video exchanging war of words.
The video which went viral on the internet created mixed views among Liberians with many condemning the action of the two public officials.
In the video, a war of words ensued between the two politicians over a misunderstanding that reportedly erupted between one Kelvin D.J. Mattaldi and Mr. Fahngon.
Reports say Mattaldi, who is also the media officer in the office of Representative Snowe, reportedly photographed Fahngon while he was allegedly dancing with a woman at a local night club.
The reports detailed that following the photograph, Fahngon immediately ordered that the photos be deleted. But the situation brought in the intervention of state security officers who landed the matter at a police depot in Monrovia.
Thereafter a huge outburst ensued between Snowe and Fahngon to the extent that the lawmaker demanded the immediate release of Mattaldi at the Zone -3 police depot.
Fahngon and Rep. Snowe were seen in the live Facebook video in an exchange of words, with a slew of expletives coming from the deputy minister.
As part of efforts to resolve the matter, the House of Representatives through an official communication from Representative Snowe cited Deputy Minister Fahngon to give his own account as to what led to him using invectives during his infamous interaction with a lawmaker.
According to the House Chief Clerk, Madam Mildred Siryon, Deputy Minister Fahngon was officially written to appear before the body’s plenary on Tuesday, September 12, 2018 to address himself to the matter, but declined to honor the communication on the claim of not receiving a copy of the letter.
Based on the response from the tough-talking Deputy Information Minister, the House of Representatives has described his action as a gross disrespect to the body and is highly contemptuous.
The House, as part of efforts to handle the matter with due diligence, has rewritten Deputy Minister Fahngon to appear before the body on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 along with his lawyer to answer why he should not be held in contempt.
“Mr. Speaker and Fellow Colleagues, the action of the Deputy Minister should not be taken for granted. If a member of the House of Representatives is brought to public ridicule that means this entire body also is being brought to public ridicule,” Representative Clarence Massaquoi of Lofa County intoned through a motion.
“And so Mr. Speaker, I move if I can be seconded that, that this Deputy Minister be charged with contempt and be made to reappear tomorrow (Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018) along with his lawyer and his immediate boss Minister Eugene Nagbe,” he added.
