Pro-democracy group condemns River Gee electoral protest

Citizens United for Peace and Reconciliation, a pro-democracy group operating in River Gee County, has categorically condemned the ongoing protest and court action instituted by Mr. Jonathan Sogbie, one of the contestants in the recent Special Senatorial elections in the county, against Senator Commany Best Wesseh for what he (Sogbie) termed as ‘electoral fraud.’

The group said citizens of the county are tired of disunity being perpetrated by some citizens of the county.

The pro-democracy group, in a press statement issued in Monrovia over the weekend, pointed out that such activities are impeding the development process in the newly created county.

Making reference to a reconciliation meeting held between the then candidates in the past Special Senatorial Election in the county, the group said, it is taking aback that Mr. Sogbie is still instigating litigation on what he calls ‘electoral fraud.’

According to the pro-democracy group, such move on the part of Mr. Sogbie does not augur well for the county’s peace and development.

According to the release, almost all of the counties in which there were electoral protests have met on a drawing table and placed such protests behind them as they move in unison for peace, understanding and progress.

The group added that following the reconciliation meeting held at the offices of Senator Wesseh, attended by all of those who contested the senatorial election in the county, it was expected that bygone should have been bygone.

But, to its surprise, others are still pursuing litigation, an action; the group maintains, is un-reconciliatory and should be condemned in its entirety.

“We are therefore calling on those who are fueling conflict in the county to desist from such behavior,” the release added.

It may be recalled that, Mr. Jonathan Sogbie, one of the contestants in the just ended Special Senatorial election in River Gee County made allegations of electoral frauds and vehemently protested the declaration by the National Elections Commission (NEC) that his then political opponent, Commany Best Wesseh, emerged from the polls as the winner of the senatorial election in the county.
Already the NEC had certificated Mr. Wesseh for his victory. Mr. Wesseh has also taken his oath of office as the new Senator of River Gee County.
